Maine first saw a poetry slam a few years ago at the Maine Festival, and the slam scene took root in Portland last fall when Granny Killam's Industrial Drinkhouse started hosting slams. The slammers' mix of words and antics have pleased the crowds that attended, but some observers feel the slams are diminishing the importance of the written word. Details.
