Abstract
"City" piece on a case filed in the Maine Supreme Judicial Court by the Maine Public Advocate appealing the rates charged on local telephone service in Maine. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) has joined the appeal. The most basic form of telephone service in Maine, which allows customers to make calls within a local area free of additional charges, was granted an increase of $3.50 per month in 1998. Last June, the Maine Public Utilities Commission agreed to let Verizon further increase rates $1.78 per month, which prompted the complaint.
