Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on a weekly batterers intervention class held at Portland's YMCA. The men in attendance are given a choice by the court: either go to weekly classes or sit in jail. But most people in the domestic violence field think this sort of education is futile, and some even think it can cause more ham than potential good. With comments by Mary Campbell, director of Opportunity for Change; Lois Galgay Reckitt, executive director of Family Crisis Services; and Roger Zimmerman, a psychologist, all in Portland. Also with excerpts from conversations with batterers who have opted to attend the classes rather than go to jail.
