Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on the parking lot at BJ's Wholesale Club in Portland, where as many as 600 local import-car enthusiasts show off their souped-up vehicles on Saturday evenings after regular business hours. Portland police are trying to crack down on the hot-rod show, citing noise ordinances and new state regulations designed to curb car modifications. But no arrests have been made, possibly because the laws are too vague to enforce. Radio City, a car-parts store near BJ's is the primary reason the location was chosen. With special focus on Maine Import Street Racers, an organized crew that modifies foreign cars and drag races them in rural areas of Cumberland, York and Androscoggin counties.
