Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on Portland's recent methadone overdose problem, which has grown to epidemic proportions, and the Greater Portland area's two methadone clinics: Discovery House in South Portland, and CAP Quality Care in Westbrook. Both clinics are for-profit businesses, and some say that is at the root of the problem. With special focus on Dr. Marc Shinderman of Portland, owner of the CAP clinic; Dr. Steven Keefe, medical director at the CAP clinic; and Dr. Joseph Py, medical director at Discovery House. Also with comments by present and/or former clients of both CAP and Discovery House who claim the clinics are more interested in their profit margins than in helping clients get off drugs, particularly methadone.
Subjects
