Abstract
"Cover Story" piece on the increasing number of private schools in Maine that receive no governmental oversight, no on-site visits from the state, do not require curriculum approval, have no formal testing methods, and don't even have to tell the state that they exist. With special focus on the New Hill School in Portland, a small, nonprofit school started in Scarborough a decade ago by Alison Noiles.
