Abstract
Cliff Islanders are debating the question of what to do about the growing deer population. Although no one can say just how many deer are, everyone seems to acknowledge there is a problem. Cliff Island is the only one of Portland's five islands that does not have a deer reduction plan. The herd could be reduced by hunting by shotgun or bow and arrow; birth control injections for does; trapping and transferring deer off the island; or hiring a sharpshooter. Philip Bozenhard, a regional wildlife biologist for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife feels a "limited hunt" is the answer. With a discussion of the pros and cons of the various reduction methods.
