Abstract
Duane Hutchins, a 44-year-old transient, stole a bottle of vodka from Hannaford's at 295 Congress Street, on Oct. 9, and was successful in outrunning the security guards who were in hot pursuit. Instead of savoring his victory, however, Hutchins returned to the store 10 minutes later and was apprehended by security guards. As Portland police office Eric Libby sought to handcuff the thief, Hutchins kicked Libby in the testicles so hard that the officer thought he was going to pass out. Libby managed to hold him until his backup arrived. Hutchins was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment of a cut over his left eye, and Libby was taken to Mercy Hospital by ambulance, treated, and released. The whereabouts of Hutchins, who was released on bail, is now unknown. When Libby was asked if he now plans to wear a groin protector, this being his second such experience, said, "Nah, I take it like a man."
