Abstract
In 1993, Maine voters approved shipping the state's low-level radioactive waste to a dump site in Hudspeth County, Texas, but Congress has yet to approve the pact. Opposition in Texas could scuttle the deal, and even if it goes through the earliest shipment probably won't be before 1998. In the meantime, radioactive waste is being stored on-site in places like Portland, Westbrook, Scarborough and Wiscasset. Details, related article on Bob Demkowicz and Mary Grow, who work at the Maine Advisory Commission on Radioactive Waste and publish Update, a newsletter on radioactive waste.
