Abstract
Summit Hill in Harrison is the site of a bubbling pool filled with spring water, which is the source of Summit Spring water. Poland Spring water is pumped from an underground aquifer to the surface via three bore holes. Maine doesn't define spring water, allowing both Summit Spring and Poland Spring to market their water as spring water, even though one is from a spring and the other from an aquifer. Kathy Harney, owner of Summit Spring, believes that consumers should know the origin of their bottled water, and is opposed to a federal Food and Drug Administration proposal to liberalize water definitions.
