Abstract

"The Talk of Maine." Maine is one of the top ten states nationally in the number of land trusts, and far and away the leader on a per capita basis. Trusts own 45,000 acres of land and 54,250 acres of easements, in addition to the 20,268-acre easement on Nicatous and West lakes, the largest in Maine's history. Maine land conservation dates to the 1956 founding of the Maine chapter of the Nature Conservancy. Details, related Augusta Kennebec Journal editorial.
