Abstract
Traditionally, motels, restaurants and tourist shops in Bar Harbor have closed each year after Labor Day when the summer people who visit Mount Desert Island in July and August have all gone back to their jobs and lives elsewhere. But that century-old tradition is changing as more and more Mainers discover the beauty of Acadia National Park in autumn. Today, many inns and restaurants stay open through Thanksgiving, and a host of shops extend their season right through the New Year. Even cultural institutions like the Abbe Museum are staying open.
