Abstract
Profile of Archie Ross, a native of Casco Bay's Chebeague Island who once owned and operated the ferry that connected Bustins Island to the mainland. In 1949, when Ross was 25, he helped to save a schooner that had run aground and was being pounded to pieces by a southeasterly gale. But in the process, his ferry, the "Victory," was lifted up and dropped down several times onto submerged pilings that punched neat ten-inch holes into her pine planking. With the story of how the Chebeague Island tradition helped a stranded mariner rebuild his lost vessel.
