Abstract
The availability of "Ilex x meserveae," a new hybrid holly, has opened a whole range of gardening possibilities for Mainers. Over the past few decades, a series of eponymous hybrids developed by plantswoman Kathleen Meserve has spread through nurseries and garden centers throughout the state. Known by such names as "Blue Princess" and "Blue Prince," these plants are crosses between the classic English holly and smaller-statured, ultra-hardy Asian varieties like "Ilex cornuta" or Chinese holly. All are said to be reliably winter-hardy through climate zone five, which takes in most of Maine except for the far north and the western mountains.
