Abstract
Feature article on the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker "Thunder Bay." With its homeport in Rockland, "Thunder Bay" has ice-breaking responsibilities from Eastport to New York City. New England ports north of Cape Cod normally receive most of her attention, and the Penobscot River up to Bangor sees her most frequently. In addition to ice breaking, "Thunder Bay" has to help maintain buoys and lighthouses throughout the winter, and must always be ready to participate in search-and-rescue operations.
