Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on the state's wilderness islands. So many kayakers and other boaters are now using so many of Maine's 3,000 islands for camping, hiking, and picnicking that the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) and other organizations are looking at a wide range of strategies to limit or control use on the state's offshore properties. MITA is the state-designated caretaker for 46 publicly owned islands that are part of the Maine Island Trail, as well as more than 70 other privately owned islands and mainland sites open only to MITA members. Currently, two-thirds of MITA's $600,000 annual budget goes to maintain its public islands.
