Abstract

Feature article on former governor Angus King's laptop initiative that last fall gave every seventh grader in the state a laptop computer to use for the year. The controversial program has been criticized as the biggest waste of taxpayer money the state has ever seen and simultaneously hailed as an innovative educational reform. Ray St. Pierre, who teaches seventh-grade social studies at Lyman Moore Middle School in Portland, says his students are learning like never before. To the surprise of the program's original critics, student and teacher reactions across the state have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic.
