Abstract

Profile of Roger Luce, a master gardener who has been growing magnolias in Maine for decades. Luce , the last resident of the Newburgh homestead that has been in his family since the early 1800s, died last year at the age of eighty-two. Luce worked with types of magnolias that are native to north-temperate climates, pushing the limits of the more delicate ones. Rick Sawyer of Fernwood Nursery, one of Luce's close friends and collaborators in plant propagation, called Luce one of the forefathers of horticulture in Maine. Details.
