Abstract

In 1843, twenty men met in a Portland schoolhouse and formed the Portland Society of Natural History, vowing to devote themselves to learn as much as possible about the natural world around them. The society in 1971 was folded into the Maine Audubon Society, which is not associated in any way with the National Audubon Society. Maine Audubon today is among the state's leading environmental advocates, and dedicates nearly half its efforts to education. Details.
