Abstract

Informational piece on Maine's 64 working lighthouses, which, in addition to functioning as navigational aids, also serve as icons of Maine's maritime heritage. In 1998, twenty-eight Maine lighthouses were deeded to state agencies, towns and nonprofit organizations as part of the Maine Lights Program. Captain Ken Black, head of the Shore Village Museum in Rockland, has the largest collection of Fresnel lighthouse lenses in the country. With a chronology of lighthouses through the ages, dating to 290 B.C.
