Abstract

Article on the University of Maine System (UMS), questioning if it is larger than it needs to be, or more expensive than Maine taxpayers can afford, and noting that Chancellor Joseph Westphal was hired in 2002 to revamp the system. Westphal sees "massive change" ahead for the university system, and feels the state shouldn't have both a Community College System and UMS competing for students and funding. Additional comments by Charles Lyons, president of the University of Maine at Augusta; Rep. Peter Mills, R-Cornville, a legislator who periodically questions the size and shape of the university system; and Wick Johnson, UMS board chairman.
