Abstract

"North by East" piece on Bruce Kershner, a scientist and author who says he discovered Maine's tallest white pine tree in the Ordway Grove near Norway. Kershner says he used modern technology to measure one tree at 155 feet tall, as well as several others around 145 feet tall. He also took a core sample from the largest tree and discovered it was 375 years old. Steve Oliveri, director of the Pine Tree State Arboretum in Augusta, is cautiously skeptical of Kershner's claim. Oliveri himself measured and documented the state's current champion, a 132-foot eastern white pine in Morrill.
