Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on the Wellington Elementary School, one of the last three one-room schools in upcountry Maine. Though the town has less than 300 residents, an informational meeting in April attracted 150 residents and a unanimous vote in favor of keeping the school open, in opposition to the board members of School Administrative District 4, who voted a year ago to close it. Selectman Harry Williford and his wife, Cynthia, who had moved to Wellington only a few months earlier, were among the staunchest supporters of the school. The board agreed to keep the school open if the town would pick up the extra $9,000 cost.
