Abstract

"What's in a Picture?" 1890 photograph, with detailed caption, showing the ice-covered remains of Granite Hall in Augusta, after one of the city's most spectacular fires. Professional photographer George O. Ayre persuaded several people to pose in temperatures of more than twenty degrees below zero in front of the Market Square building. The monumental block was rebuilt and reopened the following year as the Opera House.
