Abstract

"North by East" piece about the telecommunications changes likely to come to Maine. Among them, according to John McCatherin, a spokesman for NYNEX, is voice-dialing that would allow you to pick up the phone and say "Mom" and you would be connected to your mother. Another change would assign telephone numbers to people rather than to places. With such a system a call would be routed to a individual's personal telephone anywhere in the world.
