Abstract
"Along the Waterfront" piece reporting the Apprenticeshop in Rockport two years ago launched a replica of the turn-of-the-century Sonder-class racing boat, Bibelot, designed by Nathaniel Herreshoff, the "Wizard of Bristol." Even before the Bibelot II was launched and shipped to her owner, a member of the Bavarian Yacht Club, another member of the club contracted with the Artisans School, the successor to the Rockport Apprenticeshop, to build another Sonder-class replica to beat the Herreshoff design. The school decided to go with a fresh design of its own, drafted by President Steve Barnes, an MIT graduate in naval architecture. The new boat, "Fima," was rolled out in June for shipment to Germany after preliminary trials. Barnes, who is pleased with the looks of the radically modern underbody, believes the boat will come close to her design speed of 16 knots.
