    Abstract

"What's in a Picture?" piece on Sam Osborne, a freed slave who was brought to Waterville by a Colby College graduate from Maine. In 1867, Osborne was hired as a custodian at Colby and over the next 37 years, "Professor Sam" became an institution there. He died in 1904, four years after his daughter Marion became the first black woman to graduate from Colby College.
