Abstract
"Down East Bookshelf" piece reviewing "The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer," published by DeLorme Mapping in Freeport. Dave DeLorme, an avid fisherman, got into mapmaking out of frustration with bushwhacking his way to remote ponds and streams. His first atlas was financed by selling advertising in it, but its instant success allowed him to de-commercialize subsequent editions. Charlie Conley, communications director at DeLorme, said the atlas and gazetteer series, which now includes twenty-seven states, is by far the best-selling line of recreational maps in the country.
