Abstract

Account of author Edgar Beem's climb of Mount Katahdin with his 13-year-old daughter, Hannah, commenting on the social experience of climbing the mountain, and noting that as many as 50,000 people a year make the climb. The day of their climb was a Class II Day, meaning that park officials strongly recommended that climbers not go above the treeline. Somewhat relieved, Beem and his daughter contented themselves with hiking up to the treeline and turning around.
