Abstract

An article on the Chebeague Inn on Great Chebeague Island, run by innkeepers Dick Bowden, 64, and his wife, Janet, of Kennebunk. They took over the inn from their son, Kevin, who bought it seven years ago and is an absentee owner. They oversee a staff of 31, a dining room, and 21 guest rooms, from May through October. The inn is quiet, with a golf course and gift shop. A favorite activity of guests is sitting in the rockers on the long porch overlooking the water. The current inn was built in 1925 and is little changed, with an impressive Great Room and a mammoth fieldstone fireplace. The large, well-run dining room serves guests, yachters, residents, and island visitors.
