Abstract

"North by East" piece on the death of Bessie Phillips, 90, on April 17. She won the Down East Environmental Award in 1995 for her pioneering work in preserving the wilderness of the Rangeley Lakes Region. Her husband, Steven, who died in 1971, started the project. Mrs. Phillips bought and set aside more than 7,000 acres of pristine forest and waterfront and sparked a conservation effort that eventually encompassed some 33,000 acres.
