Abstract

Ann Flannery, 40, directed a traditional barn-raising on her land in Topsham with the help of six skilled timber framers, 50 invitees, and Philip Payson, a Freeport timber-frame carpenter, whom she had gotten to know in her boatbuilding class. The scene on the day of the raising looked as it might have a century ago. Flannery, a furniture maker, will use the barn as a workshop.
