Abstract

"Along the Waterfront" piece on the commissioning of the USS Maine, a 560-foot Trident submarine, at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery in July, and the memories its commissioning evokes of the 319-foot battleship USS Maine, whose sinking in Havana Harbor nearly one hundred years ago sparked the Spanish-American War. The new submarine cost $2.5 billion, compared to only $2.5 million for the battleship, and carries a crew of 172, including 18 from Maine.
