Abstract
Article about Caratunk, a small western Maine mountain community of about 100 people. The town is set back a mile a so from Route 201, the two-lane highway between Jackman and Skowhegan. The only store in town is the Caratunk General Store, and the nearest neighboring town is Bingham, which is a good twenty-five miles down the road. Many in Caratunk now work in the white water rafting industry. New England Whitewater has a complete oudoor recreation facility on Route 201, as well as an inn, and Down East Whitewater, headquartered in The Forks, brings in rafters to stay at its hostelry, the Dew Drop Inn, out by Pleasant Pond. Those who are not involved in outdoor recreation, might cut wood, work in the local school system, or work for Central Maine Power Company at one of the nearby hydropower stations.
