Abstract

Brief article about famous tower clock in Portland's historic First Parish Church, which stopped working on February 6 for the first time in almost two centuries and was removed for an expensive overhaul in October. First Parish, named in 1994 by the national Unitarian Universalist Association as the faith's fastest-growing mid-sized congregation in the United States, needs to raise $71,000 to rebuild the clock and steeple and to finance an endowment for its future maintenance The clock is the only original, operating, Simon Willard tower clock in existence. Willard, the most famous clockmaker of his time, worked on Thomas Jefferson's clocks at Monticello and invented the banjo clock.
