Abstract

Article by Edgar Allen Beem who stayed awake all night to find out who shops at L. L. Bean's in Freeport in the middle of the night. Beans, which doesn't even have any locks on the front doors, has been open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since, 1951, closing only two Sundays in 1962 (until a Freeport town meeting exempted the store from new Maine blue laws), for President Kennedy's funeral in 1973, for founder Leon L. Bean's funeral in 1967, and for a fire across the street at Leighton's Store in 1982.
