Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece the excellent quality of care received at Maine hospitals by those suffering heart attacks. In fact, Portland's Maine Medical Center (MMC) is among the best hospitals in the United States for the treatment of heart attack victims, and a second leader in the state is Bangor's Eastern Medical Center. The mortality rate for heart-attack victims nationwide as of September, 1996, was 5.9 percent, while the Maine rate was 5.7. Much of this has to do with the fact that MMC has reduce the time it takes to administer clot busting drugs from a median of sixty-nine minutes to a mere 20 minutes, and the state's smaller hospital have also brought down their drug-treatment times. In February 1995, "Fortune" magazine highlighted MMC as one of America's top eight hospital for patients suffering heart attacks. Dr. Costas Lambrew is director of the hospital's cardiology division.
