Abstract
Article on snowmaking at Maine's ski resorts, noting that snowmaking technology and equipment developed at Sunday River are now in use at ski areas around the world. High-tech snowmaking involves computer-controlled snow guns that can be precisely calibrated to produce anything from fine powder to a heavy base. Sunday River ski owner Leslie B. Otten credits serious snowmaking for much of his success. Greg Sweetser of Ski Maine, a Portland-based industry association, said Maine skiing brings in $120 million to $150 million each winter in direct sales, and employs about 4,000 people.
