    Abstract

"North by East" piece on the preparations Mainers take when a snowstorm is forecast. Jay Gould, veteran manager at the Shop 'n Save supermarket at the Airport Mall in Bangor, said people come in looking for rock salt, bread and milk. If a particularly bad storm is predicted, shoppers add water, batteries, canned goods and videos. Bill Duggan, a partner at Videoport in Portland, said storm shoppers come in and strip the shelves bare, adding that the store has contingency plans depending on the amount of snow forecast and the amount of hype it's getting on local television stations.
