    Abstract

"North by East" piece on Gary Howard, Brunswick fire chief and a noted gemstone hunter. Hunter made headlines three years ago when he and two others made the largest amethyst find in Maine history. Then last summer he and a partner pulled 1,500 carats of tourmaline from a quarry in Poland, the second-largest pocket of that gem ever found in Maine. In September he found more amethyst and another gemstone called citrine at the cite. Howard credits his success to a combination of luck, persistence, and knowledge.
