Abstract

"North by East" piece on the discovery of a letter written by C. F. Williams, the Boston agent of the Portland Steamship Co., which owned the ill-fated steamship "Portland" that sank in 1898 in the Portland Gale. One hundred years later, the wreck was found in waters off Cape Cod. Historians have long debated whether Captain Hollis Blanchard sailed because of pressure from company officials or of his own free will, despite growing evidence of the violent storm brewing. Williams' great-grandson, Arthur Liscomb of Arundel, unearthed the letter and loaned it to the Portland Harbor Museum. The hastily written letter seems to indicate that Blanchard sailed despite company advice against such action.
