Abstract

A short article on the impressive new veteran's cemetery and memorial in Augusta. Two rows of rough-hewn granite columns form an arc between the cemetery's chapel and its simple administration building. In one row the columns are linked by black granite slabs, inspired by the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington, D.C. Each bears veterans' names and the location of their graves. The second set of columns seems to lead back to the cemetery. Portland architect John Turk designed the $5.3 million memorial.
