Abstract

"Inside Maine" piece on clam digging, noting that the state allows anyone to take up to two pecks of clams for personal use, as long as the digging is done in flats that are open and unrestricted. Some communities, like Freeport and Bayside, have closed their clambeds in the past due to murky waters, others close theirs periodically when the tide comes in red, and still a few more allow only residents to dig.
