Abstract
Description of a portrait of Elizabeth Bourne, the wife of an early Kennebunk Landing shipbuilder and businessman, John Bourne, which hangs at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk. Painted by the prominent American portraitist John Brewster, Jr., the work is believed to be Mrs. Bourne's 1795 wedding portrait. While cleaning the portrait, art conservationists discovered the Mrs. Bourne's somber, Puritan dress and matronly coiffure actually camouflaged a bright blue gown and youthful ringlets. Richard T. Eisenhour, museum curator, speculates that the painting was altered to reflect Mrs. Bourne's status as a prominent York County matron.
