Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on the current campaign by the Conservation Law Foundation and other environmentalists to preserve 250 miles of wilderness frontage on the Penobscot, Kennebec, and Androscoggin rivers, as well as up to 60 miles along the rim of Moosehead Lake. The group is using a federal law that requires the relicensing of hydropower dams every thirty to fifty years. Dan Sosland, senior attorney at the Rockland office of the foundation, said the key to the campaign is the requirement that private companies operating dams on the rivers, which are public waterways, must give the public something in return.
