Abstract

"Inside Maine" piece on gold mining in Maine, noting that legend has it that the nation's first gold strike was in Byron, between Rumford and Rangeley. According to "Maine's Treasure Chest," by Jane Perham, thousands of dollars' worth of gold has been taken home by prospectors along the Swift River. Scott Lindsay, a ranger at neighboring Mount Blue State Park, leads visitors on panning tours of the area. Others rivers in western Maine where gold has been found include the Sandy River in Madrid and Gold Brook in Chain of Ponds.
