Abstract

"North by East" piece on Russell Knowles, of the Maine Department of Transportation, who heads four teams of road-striping crews who touch up the yellow and white highway lines. Yellow center lines on all numbered highways are repainted every year, while white curblines are done every two or three years, depending on traffic volume.
