Abstract

"North by East" piece on Fairchild Camera and Equipment Corporation, which was founded in South Portland in 1957 by Sherman Mills Fairchild. The spin-offs, start-ups, and subsidiaries that came out of his original team of engineers reads like a corporate Who's Who of the digital age. In 1987, Fairchild was acquired by one of its own grown-up spin-offs, National Semiconductor. With details those spin-offs, including Intel, which was co-founded by Fairchild engineer, Robert Noyce, who helped invent the silicone chip which the Fairchild manufactures today. His ex-wife, Elizabeth Noyce, became one of Maine's greatest philanthropists.
