Abstract
"North by East" piece on the 86-year-old Portland City Hall bell tower clock, whose chime was silenced for the inaugural performance of the Portland Symphony Orchestra in the newly refurbished Merrill Auditorium, triggering citizen complaints. As one of the few working Howard tower clocks in the country, the clock has no on-off switch, and muffling the bell isn't an easy task. The Balzer family, which maintains the clock, is trying to find a solution.
