Abstract
Article on College of the Atlantic (COA) in Bar Harbor, a liberal arts school founded twenty-five years ago, which offers a single major in human ecology. COA last fall reached its longtime enrollment goal of 250 students, and maintains a faculty of twenty-five full-time professors and as many adjunct instructors. The college has played a key role in shaping Maine's environmental debate, and also led indirectly to the founding of one of Maine's largest philanthropic organizations, the Maine Community Foundation, of Ellsworth. Steve Katona, COA president, notes that the school is increasingly seen as a model for other colleges and universities.
